...AIR QUALITY ALERT DUE TO HARMFUL PARTICLE POLLUTION LEVELS FROM
WINDBLOWN DUST...
* WHAT...The South Coast AQMD has issued an air quality alert due to
harmful levels of particle pollution from windblown dust.
* WHERE...in the . Levels of particle pollution can vary by time
and location depending on emissions and local weather conditions.
* WHEN...from 10 AM Tuesday to 6 PM Wednesday.
* IMPACTS... Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and
cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung
disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections. Everyone
can be affected, but sensitive groups such as people with lung or
heart disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children, and
those who spend a lot of time outdoors are at greater risk.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
To protect your health, check air quality levels and act as needed:
* When Air Quality Index (AQI) levels are "Unhealthy for Sensitive
Groups" (orange), sensitive groups as specified above should limit
extended or intense outdoor activity.
* When AQI is "Unhealthy" (red), everyone may experience health
impacts. Sensitive groups should avoid extended time outdoors.
* When AQI is "Very Unhealthy" (purple), sensitive groups should
avoid
all outdoor physical activity. Everyone else should avoid extended
or intense outdoor activity.
* When AQI is "Hazardous" (maroon), everyone should avoid all
outdoor
physical activity.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
To help keep indoor air clean when air quality is poor:
* Keep windows and doors closed
* Run your air conditioner and/or an air purifier
* Do not use whole house fans or swamp coolers that bring in
outside
air if you have other methods to stay cool
* Avoid other sources of pollution such as fireplaces, candles,
incense, grilling, and gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment
To help minimize outdoor particle pollution levels:
* Carpool, telecommute, reduce trips, or take public transportation
* Slow down if driving on dirt roads
* Stabilize loose soils

...PM-10 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY FOR THE YUMA AREA TUESDAY...
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued a
PM-10 High Pollution Advisory for the Yuma area on Tuesday.
An episode of strong and gusty winds is forecast to generate
widespread blowing dust that may result in local PM-10
concentrations that pose a health risk. Adverse health effects
increase as air quality deteriorates.
Coarse particulate matter - also known as PM-10 - is an air
contaminant that can aggravate heart and lung disease conditions,
especially in older adults, children, and those with asthma. A
decrease in physical activity is recommended.
Consolidate your travel, stabilize loose soils, slow down or avoid
travel on dirt roads, reduce or eliminate fireplace use, and avoid
using gas-powered lawn equipment.
For details on this High Pollution Advisory, visit the ADEQ internet
site at www.azdeq.gov/forecast/yuma or call 602-771-2300.

...AIR QUALITY ALERT: MANDATORY WOOD-BURNING BAN IN EFFECT...
* WHAT...The South Coast AQMD has issued a mandatory wood-burning
ban for residents in the South Coast Air Basin. The No-Burn rule
bans burning wood, pellets, and manufactured fire logs in any indoor
or outdoor wood-burning device.
* WHERE...The South Coast Air Basin, which includes Orange County
and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San
Bernardino counties. No-Burn Day alerts do not apply to areas above
3,000 feet in elevation, the Coachella Valley, or the High Desert.
Homes that rely on wood as a sole source of heat, low-income
households and those without natural gas service also are exempt
from the requirement.
* WHEN...Monday, January 6, 2025.
* IMPACTS...Particles in smoke can get deep into the lungs and cause
health problems (including asthma attacks), increases in emergency
room visits, and hospitalizations. No-Burn Days are needed to
protect public health when fine particle pollution levels are
expected to be high anywhere in the South Coast Air Basin. No-Burn
Days are based on fine particle pollution levels that are forecasted
for an entire 24-hour period, which may not be reflected in real-
time air quality maps.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
To protect your health, check current and forecasted air quality
levels at www.aqmd.gov or download the mobile app at
www.aqmd.gov/mobileapp. When air quality is poor in your area,
limited extended or intense outdoor activity and remain inside with
windows and doors closed. Run your air conditioner and/or an air
purifier and avoid using devices that bring in outside air like a
swamp cooler or whole house fan if you have other ways to stay cool.
Additional details for this air quality alert are available at
www.aqmd.gov/advisory. Information on the South Coast AQMD Check
Before You Burn program is available at www.aqmd.gov/cbyb.
