Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
316 AM MDT Wed Apr 2 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Unsettled weather will continue across the region
through Friday. A warming and drying trend will begin over the
weekend into early next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Friday)...A broad longwave trough remains
across the region early this morning...with several shortwave
troughs rotating around the main trough. The next of these shortwave
troughs is approaching southern Nevada early this morning.

Lake effect snow has developed over the Great Salt Lake, though
this convection has had difficulty moving off the lake given the
relatively dry low level environment across the Wasatch Front.
Occasional light snow has been reported along the Legacy Parkway,
but otherwise the snow has largely remained over the Great Salt
Lake. This area of light snow may at times reach the ground across
Davis and Salt Lake Counties through about 12-15Z.

Attention then turns to the previously mentioned shortwave trough
crossing into southern Nevada this morning. As the upper level low
shifts into northern Arizona through this evening, snow showers
will develop across the southern mountains. Rates may exceed 1
inch an hour at times between 18-03Z, bringing quick accumulations
on southern mountain roads. The remainder of the state will see
showers develop after about 18Z and continue until sunset...though
any accumulations will be limited to the higher terrain and will
be sub-advisory outside the southern mountains.

As this upper level low continues eastward Wednesday night into
Thursday, the southern Utah mountains will sit in the deformation
axis for much of the day Thursday. This will bring additional
accumulations to much of the southern mountains, with another
period of occasional 1"/hour+ rates between 18-03Z. Storm total
between Wednesday and Thursday is expected to range from 6 to 12
inches across the southern mountains (25th to 75th percentile),
with locally up to 15 inches in the Tushar Range and potentially
near Boulder Mountain. Given these totals, elected to issue a
winter weather advisory for the southern mountains.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Friday)...One more day of the broad
longwave trough overhead on Friday will result in more afternoon
showers with <0.10" of QPF, affixed mainly to higher terrain
across the forecast area. A few isolated showers are possible in
the mountains on Saturday afternoon, too, though impacts will
remain minimal. A few rumbles of thunder also can`t be ruled out
either day.

The pattern then changes as the trough shifts eastward, with high
pressure building across the western US. A weak shortwave trough
is likely to graze across northern Utah on Tuesday, resulting in a
few isolated showers, though overall we can expect quiescent
conditions and a persistent warming trend across Utah and
southwest Wyoming.

So, just how warm might we get? In terms of climatology, high
temperatures near 10-15 degrees below normal on Friday will rise
to 10-15 degrees above normal by mid-week. By Wednesday, this
translates to highs in the upper-60s/low-70s across most valleys,
40s-50s in the mountains, and mid-80s down in St. George. Beyond
Day 7, this trend appears to continue; the NBM 50th percentile
maximum temperature at KSLC is 79F next Friday (4/11).

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...A few snow showers have developed over the
lake early this morning, though the heaviest of showers are likely
to remain north of KSLC. Still, KSLC may see a few light showers
through the morning. After 18z, more scattered showers will
develop, with the terminal likely seeing fluctuations between
light rain and light snow. Southeasterly winds will prevail until
a transition to northwesterly around 17-18z.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Scattered showers will
develop after 18z across much of UT/SW-WY, with a 10-20% chance of
thunderstorms. VFR conditions will mainly prevail, though
intermittent MVFR conditions are possible with heavier showers.
Winds will be terrain-driven during the morning, becoming
northerly across most of the area during the afternoon. Winds
could be a bit erratic near showers, especially across southern
Utah.

&&

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
UT...Winter Weather Advisory from noon today to 9 PM MDT Thursday for
     UTZ125.

WY...None.
