Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wilmington NC
144 AM EST Wed Dec 24 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Warm weather through Christmas Day will cool down briefly on
Friday as a backdoor front drops south. Temperatures will warm
back up over the weekend before a strong cold front brings
brief rain chances and much colder weather late Monday into
Tuesday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
An upper level ridge continues to build across the Gulf Coast this
week. This will produce above normal temperatures on both Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day. Surface high pressure traversing the Mid-
Atlantic will keep the cooler air well north of the Carolinas. Clear
skies (other than a few cirrus clouds late this afternoon) will
bring temperatures into the 70s.
The fast progression of the high will bring a full flip of wind
directions during the period. Westerly winds early this morning will
become northerly today. Northeast winds tonight may introduce some
cloud cover, mainly near the coast. Expect lows in the mid and upper
40s for the southwestern portion of the CWA and lower 40s for
northeastern portions of the CWA (dependent on cloud cover).
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Fairly high amplitude ridge in the mid to upper levels running
up from the Gulf through the Mississippi Valley on Thurs will
flatten out a bit on Fri. H5 heights 575 to 580 dam will drop a
bit on Fri. A weak system will pass by to the north on Thurs
and may see some clouds brush the northern portion of our area,
but overall should be a warm and mostly sunny Christmas Day.
Temps should reach up above 70 for Christmas day.
Wedge of high pressure on Fri will produce a fair amount of
stratus and shallow cool air before warming up again for the
weekend. Lows should drop down near 50 Thurs night and temps on
Fri may not rebound too much with clouds and shallow cool air in
place. NAM soundings show this big drop in temps early Fri
morning near daybreak with shallow and steep inversion keeping
low clouds and cool temps with possibly a bit of pcp on Fri.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Should see a return to warmer temps for the weekend as ridge
builds back up through the Southeast as it shifts eastward with
rising heights through the mid levels. Should see high pressure
extending over the area through the weekend with a fair amount
of sunshine and temps returning back into the 60s.
Digging mid to upper trough should push a strong cold front
through on Monday with flow of arctic air into the region late
Monday into Tues. Should see some pcp ahead of this front on
Monday and then temps drop a good 30 degrees by Tues morning
and may not reach past 50 for a high on Tues.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Generally VFR today with northerly winds around 10 knots. A brief
period of ground fog is possible for inland terminals around
sunrise, but chances are very low.
Extended Forecast... VFR through late Thursday. Some restrictions
possible Friday as a cold front moves through the area. VFR should
return this weekend.
&&
.MARINE...
Through Tonight... High pressure building into the region today will
allow winds to decrease by the afternoon. Lighter winds become
variable in direction this evening as the high moves offshore. Winds
completely flip overnight with northerly winds around sunset and
southeasterly winds by sunrise. Seas around 2-4 feet this morning
flatten with the decreasing gradient to 1-3 for the remainder of the
period.
Thursday through Sunday...Winds will continue to veer from S to
the SW becoming a bit gusty Thurs aftn into Fri as wedge of high
pressure builds down behind back door cold front early Fri.
This should bump up seas a bit to 3 to 4 ft in N to NE winds up
to 20 kts developing overnight Thurs into early Fri. Winds will
continue to come around to the W to SW by Sat. Seas generally
remain in the 2 to 4 ft range until Sun night into Mon when a
stronger cold front approaches.
