.KEY MESSAGES...
Issued at 226 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025

- Cooler temperatures today, but warmer conditions are
approaching for the rest of this week.

- We are still tracking next week`s system, and confidence is
increasing for below average temperatures to unfold. Wintry
  precipitation is still highly uncertain.

.SHORT TERM ...
(This evening through Thursday night)
Issued at 226 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025

It actually feels like January to start the new year, as generally zonal
flow aloft dominates the synoptic pattern across the CONUS. Low
clouds have made for quite the cool day, keeping much of the area
in the 30s as of midday. We`ll see quite the Texas turnaround in
temperatures tomorrow with significantly warmer and sunny
conditions. Thanks to broad ridging setting up to our west and
warming 850mb temps, afternoon highs will reach the 50s to even
low 60s in spots beneath mostly sunny skies. Overnight,
radiational cooling will drop lows to the 20s by Friday morning
with clear skies and light winds.

.LONG TERM ...
(Friday through next Tuesday)
Issued at 226 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025

Ridging is progged to translate across the Plains through the end
of the week, perpetuating above average temperatures in the 50s
and 60s through Saturday. Breezy south winds of 10-20 mph with
higher gusts will only serve to reinforce WAA to the region, due
to the tightening sfc pressure gradient. Changes will be on the
way to start next week however, when our first cold snap of 2025
arrives.

Medium & long range models have hinted for some time now that
arctic air intrusions may begin diving further south over the
CONUS by the first or second week of January. This should come to
fruition next week when an upper trough slides from NW to SE across
the country. Details are still up in the air, but a cold front
will encroach upon the forecast area by Sunday, bringing breezy
north winds and strong cold air advection. While the bulk of the
coldest air mass appears to reside in the northern Plains to
Midwest regions, we still find ourselves with high probabilities
of temperatures below to well below average through midweek,
although not spectacularly cold for early January (highs in 30s &
40s, lows in teens & 20s). Early Sunday, wrap around moisture from
a departing sfc low combined with large scale lift will generate
light precipitation. Although precip is most favored to our north
and east, activity could spread into the northeast Panhandles
(15-25% POPs). For now, it`s hard to tell whether this will fall
as light rain, snow, or freezing rain, but model forecast
soundings suggest these are all within the realm of possibility.

Ensembles currently agree a positively tilted upper trough/closed
low will dig over the southern Plains mid next week, with
potentially enough moisture for precip chances to return. Snow
would be most likely given sub freezing temperature profiles, but
placement of any snowfall highly depends on the track and timing
of the low, along with our ability to retain quality moisture in
the cold air mass. Forecast data remains all over the place
regarding any snowfall amounts, but the signal of low snow chances
persists. Check back for updates as we continue to monitor this
pattern change next week.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 959 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025

VFR conditions are expected to prevail with some high clouds in
the area. Winds will remain relatively light around 12 kts or less
starting out from the south to southwest. By 18Z KGUY should see
more northerly winds first with KAMA and KDHT following suit as
winds turn around the clock in the latter half of the period.
