Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
239 AM PST Sat Nov 23 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A low pressure system moving through the area
increases precipitation chances across the Silver State this
weekend. Rain and snow shower activity will spread west to east mainly
north of I-80 on Saturday before shifting to the southeast over
east central Nevada on Sunday. For valley floors daylight hours
will feature rain showers but after sunset as temperatures
decrease snow activity will increase. Impacts for this weekends
storm system will be minor though caution should be taken on
elevated roads and mountain passes where a wintry mix and snow is
possible before precipitation winds down Sunday evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Saturday into Monday morning

An upper level trough off the west coast will trek eastward into
the CONUS this weekend and impact the region. The well amplified
trough on Saturday morning will de-amplify as it pushes eastward
and drag its axis across the state Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday
night the strong zonal flow thanks to a jet streak embedded in the
axis of the trough resides over the area.

Saturday morning heights begin to fall as the low pressure system
to the northwest begins to push its downstream flow into the
Intermountain West. Sufficient moisture (PW values in the 0.4-0.5
inch range) and PVA advect into northwestern NV by 15z on
Saturday. Precipitation increases gradually from west to east
mainly north of I-80 on Saturday. Snow levels are high enough
initially that valley floors, especially in Humboldt county, will
see mostly rainfall early morning and during the day Saturday.
Precipitation initiates a little later Saturday morning for Elko
county locations and according to model soundings temperatures
begin to decrease as the profile saturates by 15z. By 17z the
entirety of the profile resides below 0C suggesting a quicker
changeover to snow showers for Elko county. Elevated regions will
still see the bulk of snow accumulation with this system (5-7
inches for the Rubies and eastern White Pine county peaks) though
0.5-1.0 inch accumulations are possible for valley floors mainly
in northeastern and east central Nevada Saturday. Falling
temperatures throughout the day Saturday will bottom out in the
20s by Sunday morning.

For Sunday, the focus of precipitation shifts to east central
Nevada and specifically White Pine county. Precipitation will
occur mainly before 21z Sunday afternoon. Snow totals for locales
in central and eastern Nevada:

Northern Nye: 1-2 inches
Ely: 1-3 inches
Great Basin Natl Park: 5-7 inches

The cold front associated with this system finally pushes through
the area early Sunday afternoon scouring any remaining moisture
away to the east. Sunday afternoon highs will struggle to reach 40
before overnight lows again plummet into the teens by Monday
morning thanks to strong west-northwesterly post frontal winds.
Heights begin to fall from west to east again with an increase in
moisture over northwestern Nevada by 12z Monday morning ahead of
the next system set to impact the region early next week.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday

Mostly cloudy but dry conditions are expected Monday thanks to a
brief shortwave ridge. Lows in the upper teens for Monday morning
and highs in the low to mid 40s forecast. A storm system will move
through our area in the beginning of the week, resulting in
widespread rain and snow showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Minor
impacts possible for roads in higher elevations and through
mountain passes on both days. Precipitation chances will increase
beginning Monday night, with a trace of snow possible for valleys,
and 0.5 inches of snow for higher elevations. Snow levels will be
between 5,000 feet and 6,000 feet for northern Nevada until
Wednesday morning.

A trace to 0.5 inches of snow is forecast for lower elevations on
Tuesday and Wednesday, with 2-3 inches across most of the higher
passes. Lows on Tuesday will be in the low to mid 20s, and highs
will be in the low 30s to upper 40s. Temperatures will cool
slightly on Wednesday as the trough moves southeast over northern
Nevada; lows will be in the upper teens and lower 20s, and highs
will be in the upper 30s. Most ensemble cluster solutions suggest
that the trough will exit the area by Thursday morning, and
ridging will start to build again, resulting in dry conditions
through Saturday as it strengthens. A low pressure system will
develop just south of the high, off the coast of California, but
any showers that develop from the low are not expected to impact
Nevada due to the ridging in place. Temperatures will be cooler
due to northerly flow on the eastern edge of the high. Lows will
be in the teens for both Thursday and Friday mornings, and
afternoon highs will be in the upper 30s both days. By Saturday
afternoon, the ridge will dominate California and Nevada, and the
low will weaken. Light winds are expected throughout the forecast
period.

&&

.AVIATION...Ceilings continue to lower the rest of tonight and into
Saturday morning as a cold front passes across the region from NW
to SE. The front will impact KWMC KBAM and KEKO this morning, with
rain or snow showers along with southerly wind gusts of 20 to 30
knots. CIGs and VIS at these sites are expected to be VFR most of
the time, though brief periods of MVFR conditions are possible in
any moderate showers. The cold front is expected to reach KELY
around 04Z Sunday with most if not all precipitation falling as
snow.
