.DISCUSSION...
(This afternoon through next Monday)
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: A low pressure system off the coast of
California along with a high pressure system over southern U.S. is
shifting the weather pattern to a more southwesterly direction.
Periods of valley rain and elevated snow continue this afternoon
followed by a small reprieve in the precipitation Tuesday.
Temperatures still expected to be near or above record for this
time of year today and tomorrow.
High winds expected Tuesday and Wednesday with strongest winds in
central Nevada reaching up to 20-30 mph, gusts 40-50 mph. The
ongoing weather pattern is expected to keep winds elevated through
the week until dissipating by Friday.
By mid-week, the low pressure will have shifted eastward,
carrying moisture from an ongoing atmospheric river event into the
southwest, making valley rain and elevated snow more widespread
across all forecast zones in our area through the week and into
the weekend. This system is also expected to bring in much cooler
temperatures away yet still remain above normal. Temperatures
will gradually drop each day through the weekend, reaching to near
normal. The drop in temperatures increase the chance of snowfall
making it into the valleys with snow levels Thursday dropping
between 6500-7000 feet, and by Friday between 4000-5000 feet.
Snowfall expected to be widespread across the region Friday.
Over the weekend, the low pressure continues northeastward towards
central U.S. with potential of upper ridging building back up and
warmer temperatures. Models are showing some discrepancies of the
upper ridge dominating the west while some models show and off-
cut low lingering over the southwest.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS: High confidence of periods of
rain today and continuing by mid-week, lasting through the
weekend. High confidence of strong gusty winds Tuesday and
Wednesday. High confidence of cooler temperatures returning
Wednesday. Moderate confidence of snow reaching into the valleys
late Thursday and Friday. Moderate confidence of upper ridging
building up next week.
