.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 210 PM CDT Tue Oct 8 2024

We`ll see a substantial warmup over the next three days with
high temperatures well above normal and climbing back into the
middle to upper 80s. While very warm to borderline hot, these
values remain just below record values through Friday.

There is some smoke aloft across central NE that will drift
overhead tonight and Wednesday, giving the sky a little more
milky appearance. There also is another subtle wave coming out
of the Rockies. A couple of the CAMs trigger an isolated shower
in southeast Nebraska Wednesday evening. Will keep the forecast
dry for now, but will monitor new model trends. Given the dry
weather that we`ve had recently, will leave the mention of any
sprinkles or showers out for now.

There is a frontal boundary that pushes into the area on Friday.
This will switch winds to the northwest north of I80.

Pockets of very high fire danger will exist through the
remainder of the week in eastern Nebraska, but winds remaining
on the lighter side should keep extreme fire danger from
developing.

A significant pattern shift is now forecast to develop by Sunday
and beyond with a significant cooldown expected. This is a
result of strong closed low developing over the Great Lakes
region, which in turn reinforces cooler air into the region.
Highs Sunday through Tuesday are now about 5-10 degrees cooler
than the previous forecast, in the mid to upper 60s for Sunday,
but only in the upper 50s to lower 60s for Monday and Tuesday.
These cooler readings will actually be below normal, and it will
certainly feel much more like Fall. In fact, we now have lows
forecast into the lower to middle 30s for Monday morning, with
areas of frost expected. And lows are forecast solidly into the
lower 30s for Tuesday morning, with the first widespread freeze
now forecast (note a couple of our locations did hit freezing
yesterday morning).

The entire 7 day period still looks dry. And the extended
outlooks through the remainder of October all call for a very
high chance of above normal temperatures and below normal
precipitation. It has been 15 days since we`ve had measurable
precipitation in Omaha, 13 days in Lincoln, and 19 days in
Norfolk. We`ll likely continue to see the drought monitor
continue to degrade in coming weeks with no meaningful rainfall
in sight.

reach 12 kt.
