Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Omaha/Valley NE
501 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
- A band of 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible overnight into
Thursday morning, stretching northwest to southeast across
northeast Nebraska into west-central Iowa.
- Wintry impacts are expected Saturday through Sunday as a
dynamic storm system moves across the Central Plains. Snowfall
amounts are uncertain, but confidence is increasing that much
of the area will see measurable snow by Sunday night, with the
highest amounts south of I-80 across southeast Nebraska.
- Very cold wind chills are expected next week as an arctic
airmass sinks into the region bringing overnight wind chills
as low as -10 to -20.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 242 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025
Tonight through Friday
Scattered snow showers are forecast to develop late tonight into
Thursday morning across northeast Nebraska and west-central Iowa as
a fast moving mid-level disturbance moves southeast through the
area. The most likely area to see a band of 1-2" of snowfall is
along and northeast of a line from Wayne to Tekamah to Harlan
Iowa. Further south towards the I-80 corridor, on and off snow
showers are possible (40% to 50% chance) early Thursday morning.
Some slick spots may develop for the morning commute, but any
accumulations by noon on Thursday should remain under an inch.
Behind the snow, a much colder airmass will sink into the region.
Highs north of I-80 will remain below freezing tomorrow, and
lows Thursday night are forecast in the teens and upper single
digits.
A quiet day is expected Friday as ridging builds into the
central Plains while a cold Canadian surface high pushes south.
Cold air advection will continue with persistent northwesterly
flow. Highs Friday are forecast in the 20s with lows Friday
night in the lower teens and single digits.
Saturday through Sunday
A longwave trough is forecast to move southeast across the western
CONUS and across the Rockies Saturday and eventually into the
central Plains on Sunday. Ahead of this disturbance, a strong lee-
side low will develop across Colorado and deepen as it slides east
across the southern Plains. There remains some uncertainty to the
track of the surface low. Increasing low-level moisture in
combination with a tightening baroclinic zone will bring wintry
precipitation to much of the central and southern Plains. Cold
air advection will be well underway over our forecast area
keeping all our precipitation as snow. Snowfall amounts will
depend on the exact track of the surface low with current
indications all pointing toward heavier snowfall amounts across
southeast Nebraska, generally along and south of I-80, with
lesser amounts north of the interstate. Regardless of the track,
snow is forecast to develop across the entire area Saturday
afternoon/night into Sunday morning, and should end northwest to
southeast Sunday night into Monday morning. Most will see some
amount of measurable snow by the end of this upcoming weekend.
A surge of arctic air drops south behind this system bringing the
coldest airmass of the season to the area with dangerously cold wind
chills through much of next week. Readings of -10 to -20 will be
common.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 455 PM CST Wed Jan 1 2025
VFR conditions are expected to continue through midnight
tonight before ceilings and possibly visibilities fall to MVFR
or lower as a quick moving system drops southeastward across the
region. This system will bring a band of snow overnight and
into the early daylight hours for KOFK and KOMA. KLNK, on the
other hand, only has about a 15% chance for some very light
snow. Snowfall timing for KOFK is around 06-10Z with timing at
KOMA around 09-15Z. Accumulations up to 1" to 1.5" are possible
at both locations. If snow falls at LNK, the best estimate for
timing would be from 09-12z with up to a 0.1" or less of
accumulation.
