...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...
.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 203 PM EDT Sun Apr 5 2026
- A line of showers and storms will continuing moving across the
area through the afternoon. A few strong storms with small hail
and gusty winds will be possible in central GA.
- A cold front following behind the line of showers and storms
will bring dry conditions and near-normal temps through mid-
week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Monday)
Issued at 203 PM EDT Sun Apr 5 2026
A cold front pushing through the area is expected to clear the CWA
by late this afternoon. So far it`s brought little in the way of rain
and nothing in terms of severe weather. A few thunderstorms across
the far SE portions of the CWA could become strong to severe, but
given the cloud coverage out there it may be difficult to generate
the instability needed for widespread thunderstorms.
Once the line clears out, skies will quickly clear and temperatures
will return to climatological norms for most of the area. Gusty
conditions will linger through the day and into tomorrow until the
front pushes off and high pressure settles in over the area. That
process will push in quiet dry conditions, and we`ll need to keep an
eye on the potential for critical fire weather conditions through
the middle of the work week.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday morning through next Saturday)
Issued at 203 PM EDT Sun Apr 5 2026
As the long term period begins, a mid-level ridge will move across
the Southeast. Meanwhile, a strong surface high will traverse the
southern Great Lakes and advance towards New England. Within this
pattern, clearing skies and continued dry conditions can be expected
on Tuesday. Low temperatures on Tuesday morning will be in the 40s
and low 50s. Due to the influence of the mid-level ridge, afternoon
highs will be slightly warmer than Monday, in the low 70s across the
far northern tier and in the mid 70s elsewhere across the forecast
area. Dewpoints will remain in the mid 30s to low 40s, which will
result in relative humidity values dropping to between 25-35 percent
in the mid to late afternoon hours. Locations in east-central
Georgia could furthermore drop below 25 percent for a few hours. NE
winds between 8-12 mph are anticipated to keep us out of Red Flag
criteria unless winds trend stronger in ensuing forecast updates.
However, the need for a Fire Danger Statement appears likely on
Tuesday considering drying fuels and ongoing drought conditions.
On Wednesday, the surface high will be centered near New England,
with a CAD wedge developing along the lee side of the Appalachians
and overspreading much of the forecast area. Winds within the wedge
are expected to be E at 12-15 mph with gusts up to 25-30 mph.
Temperatures will also reflect the wedge with temps in the mid to
upper 60s. Temperatures will begin to moderate on Thursday as
another, more broad ridge set up over the eastern CONUS, rising into
the low to mid 70s. Temperatures will continue rising through the
end of the week, though the extent of how much will depend on the
strength of this ridge. The high pressure regime will largely limit
rain chances through the end of the week, with PoPs of 20% or less
being confined to the far southern tier of the forecast area late
Wednesday into Thursday.
