Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
245 PM PDT Fri Apr 25 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Gusty southwest winds will continue across the area this
afternoon through Saturday as a low-pressure system currently off
the west coast moves across the Desert Southwest. Isolated showers
in lower elevations across the southern Great Basin will accompany
this system, while late-season snow is expected in the Sierra.
Temperatures will remain below normal through Sunday before
increasing to above normal levels next week as high pressure
rebuilds over the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM...through Sunday.
A trough of low pressure off the southern California coast will move
across the Desert southwest over the weekend, bringing a variety of
hazards to our area. Gusty southwest winds are the initial concern,
and Wind Advisories remain in effect for the Western Mojave Desert
and Death Valley through tomorrow evening. The Morongo Basin was
added to this advisory earlier this morning and continues through
tomorrow evening. Winds have been steadily increasing through the
morning, with gusts in the 25 to 35 mph range now common in these
areas. Winds will likely diminish below advisory levels overnight,
but should increase back to advisory levels tomorrow morning. A
Lake Wind advisory also remains in effect through this evening for
Lakes Mead and Mojave, and it is possible that this may need to be
extended into tomorrow as well.

As the trough passes over the area tomorrow, the chance of isolated
to scattered showers will increase, mainly across the Sierra and
southern Great Basin. Temperatures at 500mb will be -25 to -30 C as
the low passes, so isolated thunderstorms will also be possible late
tomorrow afternoon into Sunday morning, mainly across northern Inyo,
Esmeralda, and central Nye. Given the cold air in the upper levels,
snow is also expected across the higher elevations of the Sierra and
White Mountains. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for
elevations above 6kft in the Sierra, where 4 to 6 inches of snow is
possible and up to 10 inches along the crest. Surface temperatures
will continue to cool through the weekend, with readings on Sunday
averaging about 10 degrees below normal.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday.

Broad trough axis will begin weakening Monday but will remain
draped across the central Rockies into the Southwest. This will
keep temperatures hovering near seasonal normals for Monday with
otherwise pleasant conditions. Thereafter, large scale ridging
will build across the Western US through the remainder of the
week, allowing temperatures to climb above normal Tuesday onward.
By the end of next week, temperatures across the lower deserts
will climb back into the 90s or greater, marking temperatures
roughly 8 to 10 degrees above normal with generally light winds
expected.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...
Gusty southwest winds will diminish overnight, but sustained speeds
remain elevated between 8 and 12 kts. Southwest gusts return
Saturday late-morning around 25 kts. SCT-BKN120 will develop
Saturday afternoon with showers possible Saturday evening over the
Spring Mountains. Showers may produce erratic and gustier winds.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Breezy south-southwest
winds will diminish early this evening. KBIH will favor the south-
southeast with peak gust speeds between 20 and 25 kts. KDAG will
favor the west with gust speeds around 35 kts. KEED and KIFP will
continue to see gusty winds between 30 and 35 kts through early
evening. VCSH can be expected at KBIH through early evening and then
return again by late Saturday afternoon and evening. The chance of
showers at KBIH will increase after 00Z Sun (>50%).
