Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
1228 AM PDT Mon Jun 22 2026
.SYNOPSIS...
Strengthening high pressure to the east will bring a warming trend
through Wednesday with moderate HeatRisk for Tuesday and Wednesday
for the deserts, mountain elevations below 500 feet, and portions
of the Inland Empire. High temperatures will warm to 5 to 10
degrees above average for inland areas. This will be followed by a
cooling trend through next weekend with high temperatures for
next Sunday as much as 8 to 12 degrees below average for the
valleys and coastal slopes of the mountains.
&&
.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
.SHORT TERM (Today through Wednesday)...
Strengthening high pressure to the east will bring a warming trend
through Wednesday with high temperatures on Wednesday a few
degrees above average near the coast and 5 to 10 degrees above
average for inland areas. High temperatures on Wednesday will
range from the lower to mid 70s near the coast to the 90s for the
Inland Empire with 108 to 112 for the lower deserts.
For Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be widespread moderate
HeatRisk for the deserts with locally major HeatRisk for portions
of the lower deserts on Wednesday. There will also be moderate
HeatRisk on Tuesday and Wednesday for mountain elevations below
5500 feet and for portions of the Inland Empire.
Night and morning coastal low clouds will spread into the western
valleys late each night, though with some decrease in marine layer
depth through Wednesday. Some mid and high level moisture and
clouds could be drawn into the area from the southeast for late
Tuesday and into Wednesday.
&&
.LONG TERM (Thursday through Sunday)...
High pressure to the east will begin to slowly weaken and the axis
move slowly southward as a closed low pressure system off the
southwest coast of British Columbia directs a stronger jet stream
across the western states to the north. The onshore flow across
southern California will weaken with cooling spreading inland.
On Thursday, moderate to locally major HeatRisk will continue for
the lower deserts.
By Sunday, high temperatures will be as much as 8 to 12 degrees
below average for the valleys onto the coastal slopes of the
mountains. High temperatures for next Sunday will range from
around 70 near the coast to the upper 70s to mid 80s for the
Inland Empire with the upper 90s to 104 for the lower deserts.
Night and morning coastal low clouds will spread inland into
portions of the valleys late each night.
&&
.AVIATION...
220530Z...Coast/Valleys...Low clouds have formed along the San Diego
coast with bases 1400-2000ft MSL. These clouds will continue to
increase in coverage and push inland over the next few hours. Low
clouds will spread north into Orange County after 08-09Z. The Inland
Empire may see some low clouds overnight but would be patchy in
nature. Low clouds will begin their retreat after 15Z, clearing the
coast by 17-18Z. Cigs return 01-03Z Tuesday with slightly lower
bases expected.
Mountains/Deserts...VFR conditions expected through the TAF period.
Westerly wind gusts of 25-40 kts along desert slopes and locally
into deserts expected through 09Z. Local VIS reductions 4-6 SM in
BLDU during periods of strong gusts and moderate up/downdrafts in
lee of mtns.
&&
.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Friday.
&&
.BEACHES...
Surf heights have lowered slightly, but may become elevated again by

encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
