Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
243 AM PST Thu Nov 14 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
Periods of scattered light to moderate snow, rain, and breezy
winds expected today through Friday with moderate mountain travel
impacts. Northern CA remains in an active weather pattern at the
end of this week into early next week.
.DISCUSSION...
Today`s showers have mainly dwindled out, outside of lingering
showers over the Northern Sierra. The forecast area remains in an
active pattern as troughing elongates and sweeps over Northern CA
today through early Friday, continuing periods of light to
moderate snow, light rain, and breezy winds. Today will see
lighter totals compared to Wednesday and be concentrated to the
Northern Sierra and Southern Cascades.
It will be more showery in nature with hi-res models showing a
more organized push of rain later this evening over the northern
portions of the Sac. Valley. Then on Friday, have lingering
showers over the Sierra south of I-80. Rain totals will be
0.01-0.25" across the Valley floor and adjacent foothills with
0.25-0.75" over the Northern Sierra/Southern Cascades. Chances to
see an inch of greater over the mountains are 50-70% from now
through Saturday morning. Although amounts may be less, there is a
better signal for convection (15-20% chance) today across the
Central Valley, north of Interstate 80. With any formed
thunderstorm, it brings the threat of brief heavy rain showers,
breezy winds, lightning, and small hail.
Periods of snow continue through Friday night with an additional
snow totals of 4 to 10 inches, up to 12 to 15 inches forecasted
for the Sierra and Lassen National Park area. As a result, a
Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Western Slope
Northern Sierra/Western Plumas/Lassen Park Counties above 5500
feet for snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches and gusts up to 35
MPH through 10 PM Friday. Snowfall accumulation will be sparse
today outside of lingering showers north of I-80, mainly near
Lassen. This evening will see showers begin to redevelop over the
Sierra with periods of moderate snow early Friday morning. 48-hour
probabilities (Thu AM - Sat AM) show a 60-80% chance of totals
over 12 inches for elevations above 6000 feet. Snow should begin
to taper off Friday afternoon, eventually dwindling out by Friday
evening.
Saturday and Sunday forecasted morning temperatures will be near
freezing in the Valley and carry the potential for patchy frost
development. Coolest Valley temperatures will be across the
central Sacramento to the Northern San Joaquin Valleys. There is a
30-50% chance on Saturday for Valley morning temperatures to be
less than 35 deg F, highest across the intersection of Yuba and
Sutter counties. Chances lower to 20-40% on Sunday.
Northern CA remains in an active weather pattern and on Sunday, a
shortwave trough drops down from the Pacific NW that will bring
another round of rain, mountain snow, and breezy winds. There is a
40-65% of precip. totals greater than 0.25" over the mountains and
Northern Sacramento Valley, including Redding with a 15-25% chance
over the Southern Sacramento and Northern San Joaquin Valleys on
Sunday. Rain starts over the Coastal Range Sunday morning and will
remain over that area until later that evening and eventually
spread south and east across the forecast area.
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday)...
Lingering mountain snow showers possible Monday as upper trough
moves through CA. Upper ridging then forecast to build over the
CWA Tuesday through midweek. Dry weather will result with some
gusty north to east wind. Warming trend expected through the
extended forecast period with high temperatures returning to near
normal.
