Area Forecast Discussion

100 AM CST Fri Nov 15 2024

...New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...

.NEAR TERM...
(Today)
Issued at 100 AM CST Fri Nov 15 2024

Low stratus continues to shift to the south and east early this
morning, with clear skies currently observed on satellite across
much of northwest Alabama. The clearing line will slowly push to
the east for the remainder of the early morning hours, resulting
in clearing as far east as at least the I-65 corridor -- with
overcast conditions likely persisting across much of the Plateau
region of southern middle Tennessee and northeast Alabama. In
locations where clearing occurs, patchy fog development will be
possible due to moist boundary layer conditions from earlier
rainfall. This fog will dissipate by mid-morning, but low stratus
in our eastern zones will persist through early afternoon due to
the stout inversion in place. Late day sunshine will help to warm
temperatures into the low to mid 60s once again despite the light
northerly flow.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Monday)
Issued at 100 AM CST Fri Nov 15 2024

A mid/upper ridge axis will continue to build into the Tennessee
Valley tonight into Saturday, supporting mostly clear and dry
conditions. The only exception may be late tonight into early
Saturday morning when patchy fog and some scattered decks of low
stratus may develop and/or push back into the region from the
north. Overall though, we can expect plenty of sunshine each day
as the ridge settles in and our winds pivot to a southerly
direction. In turn, highs will climb from the upper 60s on
Saturday to the low to mid 70s Sunday and Monday -- with overnight
lows upper 40s to mid 50s.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through Thursday)
Issued at 100 AM CST Fri Nov 15 2024

A much more active pattern returns by the middle of next week,
giving us some much needed rain chances. Monday night into
Tuesday, a deepening upper trough will eject from the Southern
Plains into the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes. This
will bring a cold front through the Mid South and into the
Tennessee and Ohio Valleys. Meager instability will keep the
threat for thunderstorms very low, but medium to high (60-80%)
rain chances are forecast during the day on Tuesday. The initial
front will clear the area Tuesday night, but a stronger, deeper
trough will blast from the central/southern Plains into the Ohio
and Tennessee Valley Wednesday into Thursday, keeping low to
medium (20-40%) chances for rain showers in the forecast and
potentially bringing in a notably cooler air into the region by
late next week. Highs will drop from the low to mid 60s Wednesday
to the lower 50s on Thursday -- with overnight lows dropping to
the upper 30s to lower 40s!

&&

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1114 PM CST Thu Nov 14 2024

Low stratus are shifting to the south and east -- and a return to
VFR conditions will occur at KMSL within the hour and KHSV likely
between 07-08z. The clearing conditions will help to create a
favorable setup for patchy fog around daybreak and have added a
mention of this at both terminals. Any fog should dissipate by
after sunrise, with mostly clear conditions prevailing through the
remainder of the period.
