.SYNOPSIS...
Hot and dry weather this week, peaking this weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A few high clouds are traversing across Northern California today
as a shortwave trough moves across the region. A few showers and
thunderstorms have begun to develop this afternoon in Siskiyou
County and northward, just north of our CWA. The marine layer
remains around 1000 ft at Fort Ord, and the shortwave is bringing
a robust onshore flow through the Delta. As such, temperatures
across the region are running within a few degrees of where they
were 24 hours ago.

The warming trend will return on Thursday as the shortwave trough
lifts northeastward and high pressure builds from the south and
west. Widespread triple digit heat is expected on Friday as
surface flow becomes northerly and the Delta Breeze diminishes.
Temperatures will be as hot or perhaps slightly hotter on
Saturday, with a record high within reach at Downtown Sacramento.
Given the potential for heat-related illnesses with this sharp but
relatively brief heat stretch, an Excessive Heat Watch has been
issued across the Sacramento and northern SJ Valleys, along with
adjacent foothills.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Sunday THROUGH Wednesday)

The upper ridge axis will shift overhead and eastward during the
day Sunday. The Delta Breeze is likely to strengthen accordingly
during the day, bringing some a fair amount of cooling to areas
adjacent to the Delta. The northern Sacramento Valley likely will
remain very hot on Sunday, as north winds Sunday morning will keep
the boundary layer well-mixed and very warm.

More substantial cooling is expected starting on Monday as an
upper trough moves through the Pacific Northwest. Look for
temperatures across the region to hover within a few degrees of
normal early to mid next week.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions expected the next 24 hours. Winds generally under
10 knots are expected except near the Delta, where gusts to 30 kt
are possible. EK
