Duff Moisture Code (DMC)
The DMC measures moisture in loosely compacted organic layers of the forest floor. Higher values mean drier fuels and more intense fire.
Color Value Category Description
 0 – 20Very LowDuff layer moist. Low fire intensity from surface fuels.
 21 – 40LowModerate drying. Surface fires may burn into duff.
 41 – 60ModerateSignificant drying. Moderate fire intensity in forest fuels.
 61 – 80HighDry duff layer. High fire intensity. Difficult suppression.
 80+ExtremeExtremely dry duff. Intense burning. Very difficult to control.
