Waterspout watch in effect
Eastern Lake Ontario
Issued 00:46 AM EDT 25 August 2026
Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts through tonight. Conditions will remain favourable for waterspout development into Tuesday morning over Lake Ontario.
Waterspouts are generally short-lived in nature, typically lasting 20 minutes or less.
Waterspouts sometimes appear as funnel clouds with swirling water visible near the surface.
Waterspouts are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. Under favourable conditions, this weak rotation could intensify and become a tornado.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. For more information monitor Canadian Coast Guard radio or Weatheradio stations.
