Details:
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible above 6500 feet. Total snow accumulations between 10 and 24 inches possible. High elevation snow up to 4 feet. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. * WHERE...A portion of central California. * WHEN...From 4 PM this afternoon to 4 PM PST Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening and Monday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. Information: If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1. Persons are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a hat will keep you from losing your body heat. Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order. |

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect until 7 PM PST this evening. * Affected Area...Fire Weather Zone 274 Southern Mono County, Fire Weather Zone 421 Southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties and Fire Weather Zone 429 Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral Counties. * Winds...South to southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph. Wind prone areas may reach gusts of 80 mph. * Humidity...As low as 12 to 18 percent. * Duration...3 to 9 hours of critical conditions. * Impacts...The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. Information: Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions.
