114 FXUS65 KSLC 070925 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 325 AM MDT Mon Jul 7 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Building high pressure will keep dry and increasingly hot conditions over Utah and southwest Wyoming through midweek. A weakening trough will move across northern Utah late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing temperatures back to near seasonal normals for Thursday. Another warming trend is anticipated by the upcoming weekend. && .SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Wednesday)...Seeing another night of mostly clear skies across Utah and southwest Wyoming with high pressure in place over the Desert Southwest. This ridge will build and amplify over the next couple of days, bringing increasingly hot temperatures to the region. Highs today are expected to be around 5F above seasonal normals and about 10F above seasonal normals by Tuesday, putting triple digit temperatures back into play for some northern valley locations, including the Wasatch Front. Conditions will remain dry, with just some cumulus developing over the higher terrain each afternoon. As a closed low off the Pacific coast tracks slowly east, there will be enough of an increase in winds, primarily over western Utah, by Tuesday to result in some isolated critical fire weather conditions given the hot and dry airmass. .LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Wednesday)...A shortwave passing through northern Utah on Wednesday will bring the only (small) chance for convection to the area through the period. After this passage, high pressure becomes centered over southern California. This positioning of the summer ridge is not conducive for a monsoon moisture tap across Utah. However, the silver lining in this location of the ridge is that it keeps a light westerly/northerly flow aloft across the area that will help to limit how hot temperatures get. Southerly flow will increase ahead of the approaching shortwave. This will result in southerly winds gusting in the 20-30 mph range across much of the area. These gusty winds will pair with RH values in the upper single digits to low teens. Mid and upper level moisture will advect into the region as this shortwave passes to the north. As such, there remains a small chance for some convection on Wednesday afternoon/evening. Forecast soundings with inverted V profiles would suggest very little QPF is possible across valleys, but there will exist the threat for some microburst winds. Additionally, Wednesday will most likely be the hottest day of the 7 day period as temperatures drop back near normal as northwest flow becomes established behind the shortwave with high pressure centered over southern California. && .AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will persist for the KSLC terminal through the period. Dry conditions with clear skies will continue as winds will be light and diurnally driven. .REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions will persist for the entire airspace through the period. Dry conditions with mostly clear skies will continue as winds will be relatively light and diurnally driven. && .FIRE WEATHER...High pressure remains parked over the Desert Southwest this morning, where it will build over the next few days. Conditions will stay dry over Utah with increasingly hot temperatures. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday are forecast to average around 10F above seasonal normals. A low off the California coast will slowly move eastward through Tuesday. As it approaches, it will bring up winds enough to produce very isolated critical fire weather conditions, primarily over western Utah. This trough will eventually move across northern Utah late Wednesday into Thursday in a significantly weakened state. However, winds will increase further Wednesday as it approaches, and while critical fire weather conditions are expected to remain isolated, they will be more widespread than previous days. The trough will be mostly to totally dry, but will bring a notable drop in temperatures behind it. Thursday`s highs are expected to be back to around normal for this time of year before another warming trend commences for the upcoming weekend. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
