Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
248 PM PDT Wed Apr 16 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Look for a continuation of the isolated to scattered
rain showers and isolated thunderstorms through the late
afternoon ahead of a cold front. Cooler temperatures, breezy to
locally windy conditions, and valley rain showers with light
mountain snow showers are expected Thursday into Friday. Warm and
dry conditions return for the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night. Scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms have developed across northeast and
central Nevada this afternoon. Automated stations are not
reporting much in the way of precipitation but wind gusts to 35
mph are possible with any storm. Look for the convective activity
to continue into the early evening hours tonight. Some isolated
light showers are expected to continue through the night as a
surface cold front dives southward across the forecast area. Wind
gusts to 20 to 30 mph are possible with the passage as win
directions shift to the northwest. Overnight lows will be in the
30s with readings in the 20s near the border with Idaho.

On Thursday and Thursday night, the cold front will be exiting
the forecast area early in the morning. A sharp shortwave will
dive southward across eastern Nevada. Expect strong northwest
winds to develop with speeds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.
Some locations along the lee-side of mountain ranges could see
gusts to 45 mph. Isolated to scattered showers are possible in
northeast and east-central Nevada tomorrow afternoon. Highs will
be much cooler than Wednesday with readings in the 40s and 50s.
The upper level shortwave will pivot to the east Thursday evening.
Sufficient moisture and instability will exist during this time
frame for light rain and snow showers over east-central Nevada.
Current forecast snow amounts depict about one to two inches
across the Jarbidge area with up to a half inch over the valley
locations in eastern Elko and White Pine counties. About an inch
is possible around Great Basin National Park. The higher passes
and summits in these locations can also see up to an inch.
Overnight lows will be in the 20s.

.LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday.
Light snow showers will dissipate by Friday evening as a low
pressure system moves east and exits our area. Highs will be in
the upper 40s and lower 50s due to cooler, northerly flow on the
back side of the trough. High pressure will move in on Saturday
and will continue to dominate our weather through Wednesday,
resulting in mostly dry conditions and temperatures warming to
the 60s on Saturday, and the 70s by Monday. Light rain and snow
showers are possible in parts of northern and eastern Nevada from
Sunday afternoon through Monday night as a shortwave trough tracks
north of Nevada. Another weak shortwave trough will bring light
showers to the same parts of the state on Wednesday afternoon as
it follows the same path. Little accumulation and impacts are
expected from winter weather due to limited moisture and warm
afternoon highs.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at all terminals today
and tonight. Thunderstorms are expected near all airports except
for KWMC this afternoon and early evening, but little accumulation
is forecast due to limited moisture. Wind gusts up to 25 kts are
expected as thunderstorms move near affected terminals. Winds will
increase later this evening for all airports, with gusts up to 30
kts.
