.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 334 AM EST Tue Dec 24 2024

Skies are mostly clear across the N 2/3 of the area early this
morning, with lingering low clouds (2500-4000 ft ceilings) across the
S 1/3 of the area. 3 AM temperatures ranged from the lower 20s in
the NE mountains to the mid 40s beneath the aforementioned low
clouds.

A weak shortwave is presently shifting offshore the SE U.S. Low
clouds across the SE zones are already thinning from the N, and this
trend is expected to continue through the morning hours. Zonal flow
in the wake of the shortwave will be short-lived, as an upper trough
digs over the S Plains today and shifts E to the S MS Valley by
Wednesday. In response, a weak upper high will develop over the area
and upstream flow will become increasingly southwesterly. High
cloudiness will begin to increase across the area on Wednesday.

High temperatures today will range from near 50 across the NE
mountains to the lower 60s across the SE (about 10 degrees higher
than Monday`s highs). Low temperatures Wednesday morning will range
from the lower to mid 30s across most of the area. High temperatures
on Wednesday will be near to slightly higher than today`s highs. /SEC

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday night through Monday)
Issued at 334 AM EST Tue Dec 24 2024

Highlights:

 - A few instances of light rain/drizzle will be possible through
the remainder of the week with more widespread, meaningful
   rainfall expected during the weekend.

 - Gradual warming of daytime temperatures through the period.

At the start of the long term we will be in the midst of a conveyor
belt of shortwaves moving through the region. Surface high pressure
(in the form of a CAD wedge) and midlevel ridging along the east
coast will keep easterly flow off the Atlantic present over the
region. Between Christmas Night (Wednesday Night) and Friday, a few
pieces of energy will pass just to our north. This will result in
increased cloud cover and perhaps some instances of light rain or
drizzle due to isentropic lift. Rainfall accumulations are expected
to remain low through the work week with most locations struggling to
see a tenth of an inch. Thunderstorms appear unlikely Thursday
through Friday given the lack of instability and upper level support.

As we approach the weekend, a southern stream trough will swing
across the Plains and deepen. Midlevel ridging will gradually shift
east and the wedge will start to erode. Surface winds will shift back
to the south ushering moisture back to the area with PWs rising to
the ~1.0 to 1.2 inch range. The onset of light rain is forecast to
begin late Friday. Ahead of a cold front, rain showers will continue
to spread across the forecast area becoming more widespread by
Saturday into Sunday. The opportunity for thunderstorms looks a
little better this weekend given better upper level support
(divergence at the midlevels) and lift along the front.

Above normal temperatures can be expected through the long term even
within the wedge. Christmas Night (Wednesday Night) will be the
coldest night in the period with forecast lows in the mid 30s in the
NE GA mountains to low 40s elsewhere. Forecast lows each night will
increase with values in the 40s to low 50s. Forecast highs will range
from the low 50s to upper 60s.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 645 AM EST Tue Dec 24 2024

Mostly VFR conditions will continue. However, low clouds across
central and S GA will bring periods of MVFR cigs at MCN for a few
more hours. These clouds are forecast to erode and shift E later this
morning. Winds will be very light, but a period of NW winds are
expected by late morning.
