Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
130 AM PDT Tue Jun 24 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Cooler than average temperatures with overall dry conditions
  continue today.

* There is a slight chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms
near the Sierra crest from the Tahoe Basin southward through
  this evening.

* Temperatures return to seasonal averages on Wednesday, then
rise to above average this weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper level trough continues its slow eastward trajectory through
the Great Basin. The low is providing the upper lift, while
instability combined with orographics brings the surface lift for
the development of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and
evening near the Sierra crest. There is a 10-20% chance for this
activity to develop from the Tahoe Basin southward, especially
over Mono county. Timing for showers is still the same as
yesterday between 2-7 PM. Main hazards continue to be gusty winds
up to 45 mph and brief periods of heavy rainfall. Temperatures
will continue on its warming trend with below average conditions
today, but seasonal tomorrow.

The aforementioned trough leaves the area Wednesday, but zonal
flow returns with the approach of another weak upper trough over
the PacNW, and barely scraping northern CA/NV. This will keep
seasonal to slightly above average temperatures through Friday.
Furthermore, westerly winds will pick up each afternoon. The
stronger winds combined with low relative humidity in western NV
and eastern Lassen county brings the return of elevated fire
weather conditions.

A high pressure area in the Desert Southwest expands towards us
this weekend and early next week. Therefore, expect temperatures
to heat up, especially on Sunday when we are expecting the hottest
day of the week. Afternoon highs will be in mid to upper 90s for
western NV and NE CA valleys, and in the upper 70s to upper 80s
for Sierra communities by Sunday. These temperatures are about 5
to 10 degrees above average. This heat also brings some marginal
instability that may result in a few showers and thunderstorms
during the late afternoon and evening hours.

.AVIATION...

* VFR conditions continue with light and VRB winds in the morning
and overnight hours. Winds become generally from the west and
northwest with speeds up to 10 kts and gusts up to 20 kts after
20Z. Winds subside around 03Z. Storm chances persist around
10-20% for Sierra terminals this afternoon.

* There is less than 10% chance for FG through 15Z for KTRK.
Chances for FG may return tonight, if rain or storms develop in
the Martis Valley this afternoon. -HC/McKellar
